Intro

Drilling Beyond Limitations: A Medical Design Breakthrough

In collaboration with Taryag Medical, we played a pivotal role in the development of the BYCROSS® catheter, a groundbreaking medical device that enables the restoration of blood flow in patients suffering from peripheral arterial disease (PAD). This innovative product pioneers a novel approach to atherectomy, allowing for the precise removal of occlusions in arteries that were previously deemed un-drillable. With a focus on safety, efficiency, and precision, BYCROSS® is transforming the treatment of chronic occlusions.

Design strategy

Precise force, perfected for safety

From the very early stages of the project, our design process centered on achieving the perfect balance between mechanical potency and user safety. The device's ability to navigate tortuous arteries and remove calcified material needed to be paired with an intuitive, reassuring user interface. Our team developed the catheter head, back deployment mechanism, and integrated electronics to ensure seamless operation. We focused on ergonomic features like easy-to-press buttons and intuitive graphic markings to enhance usability, ensuring that medical professionals could operate with precision under any condition.

Mechanical design

Where precision meets regulatory excellence


The mechanical design of BYCROSS® is a perfect marriage of functionality and aesthetics, created to meet the rigorous standards of the medical device industry. The product's injection-molded components were engineered for simplicity and reliability, with no metal parts, ensuring it could be safely disposed of after use. The product shells, crafted for both ease of handling and functionality, house the device's complex electronics and mechanisms securely. The catheter tip’s expandable design, the integrated aspiration system, and the unique light guide are all key components that contribute to the device’s unmatched precision.

Our work also involved creating the electronics that power the BYCROSS®, ensuring smooth operation with the ability to aspirate calcified material and debris while monitoring the device's functionality in real-time. By focusing on both the product's internal and external design, we ensured that BYCROSS® not only performs at its best but also provides medical professionals with a user-friendly and reliable tool.
